Grants to South African Organizations

BC/EFA’s International Grants Program has had it’s biggest impact in South Africa where $974,000 has been sent in 122 grants to 32 organizations in appreciation of the efforts of the South African members of the Broadway and national touring companies of The Lion King. Begun after the Easter Bonnet Competion in 1998, BC/EFA offered to share 50/50 all money raised by the cast of The Lion King with AIDS service organizations identified by the South African actors in the cast. Since then – these efforts have expanded to both national touring shows.

BC/EFA is very proud of its collaboration with Disney Theatricals and The Lion King cast members whose extraordinary efforts during our twice annual six-week appeal periods in the theatres makes these resources possible.

Most recently – in June 2005 - $160,000 was wired to 19 service providers in such South African cities as Johannesburg, Greytown, Cape Town, Springs, Durban and Pinetown for such projects as sanctuaries for abandoned or abused HIV+ children, health care centers, food parcels and soup kitchens, prevention and education workshops and shelters for women and children with AIDS.

Here are some responses recently received:

“Thank you for your most generous assistance. Your giving is our living.”

Cotlands Sanctuary / Johannesburg, South Africa

“Your help couldn’t have come at a better time for our Soup Kitchen and Nutrition Center. Our entire community is fighting for the support and care of so many with AIDS – who at times are even rejected by their own families. Thank you for adding to the limited resources at hand.

Kwa-Thema Center / Springs, South Africa

“Thank you so much for the very kind donation you sent for our children. We are very touched that you thought of us from so far away. Your generous donation will go towards our building fund. We are in the process of building a small cottage for our older children, who fortunately have lived longer than the doctors ever predicted. We know that the children will love their new home. Thank you for helping to make it possible.”

Nazareth House Children’s Home / Cape Town, South Africa

“Greetings to all at Broadway Cares. Thank you for all you have done for us at Umlazi. You have helped so many people and orphans. Words do not express our gratitude. It is very difficult here. Three weeks ago I buried 3 people from the same family in one day. But what we are able to provide for the children who have lost their parents to AIDS is a special testimony of your good works. May God richly bless and keep you and all those who make your work possible.”

Umlazi Child Care Center / Durban, South Africa

“Thank you for the funds it makes it possible to keep feeding the orphaned children. The crisis we are facing is getting worse every year. The center where mothers and children congregate each morning - the number has doubled since last year. We now have 35 children and 44 women - 20 of the 44 women are in the bead work classes * so that they can earn some money. Thanks again to my friends at BC/EFA.”

Thuli Dumakude – who starred as Rafiki on Broadway and now is the director of Bumbanani Creche in Greytown, Kwazulu-natal.

* Note: BC/EFA has purchased over $100,000 in beaded ornaments and animals that are made in South Africa, sent to us here in NYC and re-sold by the companies of The Lion King – providing employment and wages to the women who make the ornaments and to raise additional funds.
