The 21st Annual Gypsy of The Year Competition

At the 21st Annual GYPSY OF THE YEAR Competition, the star of this season’s Superior Donuts, Michael McKean, and the luminous Bernadette Peters stunned the audience when they announced that a record-breaking $4,630,695 had been raised during the six weeks of collections by Broadway, Off-Broadway and National Tour companies. This breaks the previous record when $3,927,000 was raised for the 2007 GYPSY OF THE YEAR Competition and brings the total raised over the past twenty-one years of GYPSY OF THE YEAR Competitions to $40,360,000.

In addition, A Steady Rain starring Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman raised the most money of any show in the history of GYPSY OF THE YEAR collecting $1,549,952 – breaking the all time fundraising record set in 2003 by The Boy from Oz which also starred Jackman.

The GYPSY OF THE YEAR Competition is not only the culmination of six weeks of intensive fundraising, but also a sensational display of the most talented singers and dancers in the chorus of Broadway shows (a.k.a. Broadway Gypsies). The results of this year’s best presentations went to First Runner Up – West Side Story and Winner – Chicago. This year’s event was hosted by Tony Award winner Julie White, currently in The Understudy Off-Broadway, and noted Broadway personality Seth Rudetsky, host of “Seth’s Big Fat Broadway” on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio.
